JapanLingo
Delete your account
You can request permanent deletion of your JapanLingo account and the learning data linked to it, right here on this page. You do not need to sign in, and you do not need the mobile app — this works for every JapanLingo account, whether you study on the web or on your phone.
Request account deletion
Enter the email address for your JapanLingo account and submit the form. We record your request, check that it came from the account holder, delete the account, and email you at that address to confirm it is done.
We will never ask for your JapanLingo password, your Google password, or any payment details.
What will be deleted
Confirming removes the following from JapanLingo’s servers:
- Your account — name, email address, and sign-in credentials.
- Saved items — kanji, vocabulary, and the work, IT, and job-hunting lessons you bookmarked.
- Learning progress — lesson and kanji completion records, and JLPT progress.
- Flashcards — your saved flashcards and their review schedule.
- Quiz history — quiz attempts, scores, and the answers you submitted.
- Sign-in data — active sessions and access tokens, so the account is signed out everywhere.
What may be retained
After deletion we keep a record that a deletion request was made and completed, with the email address it was submitted for and the date. We keep it so we can show the request was received and honoured, and so a repeat request can be recognised.
Where encrypted backups of our database exist, deleted records may still be present in them until those backups are overwritten in the normal rotation cycle. Backups are not used to restore deleted accounts.
We may also keep information where the law requires it — for example records relating to a purchase — for as long as the relevant law requires, and information needed to prevent fraud or abuse or to resolve a dispute.
Subscriptions
Deleting your JapanLingo account does not cancel an active Google Play or App Store subscription. Those subscriptions are managed by the store, not by us, so please cancel any active subscription through your store account before deleting your JapanLingo account:
- Google Play — Play Store → Menu → Subscriptions.
- App Store — Settings → your name → Subscriptions.
Deletion is permanent
Once the deletion is complete, your account and learning progress cannot normally be restored. If you sign up again later, you start with a new, empty account.
We check each request before acting on it, so that nobody can have someone else’s account deleted by submitting their email address. If we cannot confirm the request came from the account holder, we will contact you at this address instead of deleting anything.
Prefer to delete inside the app?
If you happen to have JapanLingo installed and are signed in, you can also delete your account from Profile → Delete account. It does exactly the same thing as the form above — it is an alternative, not a requirement.
Need help?
If you cannot complete the request — for example because you no longer have access to the email address on the account — email us at csjotlab@gmail.com and we will help you verify ownership another way.
